In the poem "When You Are Old" the poet talks about his beloved. In this poem "When You Are Old", the poet addresses his beloved named Maud Gonne who was the most beautiful young lady during his time. So basically the poet imagines his beloved's future years and his true love in future. Basically this poem is a bittersweet poem which reveals the complexities of love.
He says her that when she grows old and her hair gone grey, when she will be full of sleep and nodding by fire take the book that he had penned and read it slowly. He tells her to remember the days of her youth when she had soft looks in her eyes and her shadows were deep. Further the poet tells his beloved to remember of all those who loved her glad grace once, they just loved her physical beauty. The poet loved her pilgrim soul which is in quest of true love. And he also loved her sorrows of changing face. In succinctness he says now she has grown old and all those admirers of her physical beauty has disappeared now. But the only one man; the poet loves her with all his heart irrespective of her appearance. Love has fed worth changing time and hid amidst the crowd of stars. Thus, in this manner the poet brings out his passionate love for his beloved but she fails to understand the poet's passionate love towards her. At the end, the poet wants to convey her that he was the only one who loved her constantly in all her forms (that is) both in her youth and old age.
